This Week in Cause with Jim Keady of Educating For Justice On the second episode of This Week in Cause, hosts Jonathan Harris and Christina Gagnier kicked off with a discussion of the recent “Do Something Awards” and the winner, Jessica Posner. 23 year old Posner co-founded “Shining Hope for Communities,” an organization dedicated to combating gender inequity and poverty in the massive African slum of Kibera. Posner worked to establish the Kibera School for Girls, the first free school in Kibera, which has helped over 5700 residents find employment and education. The discussion then moved to the Social Innovation Fund, a government organization established under the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act, which recently awarded grants to a variety of organizations, including The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, which focuses on improving economically disadvantaged young people’s educational skills and workforce readiness. The hosts then looked at the trailer for the documentary film “Countdown to Zero,” which makes a passionate case for the total elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide. In the “Celebrities and Cause” segment of this show, the hosts looked at the work done by Sandra Bullock, which includes her donations to Haiti after that nation’s devastating earthquake and her efforts to publicize clean-up in the Gulf Coast following the BP oil spill. In the “Causewash” segment, the hosts discussed Nike’s “Reuse the Shoe” campaign, which claims to work towards recycling Nike …
